If I understand what you are saying then the reason for that is that the hard drive may be damaged when you need to use it or it can not be read properly
You can, but I would advise against it as your computer should be shut down normally thru Windows. This way Windows is shut down properly, and the the read/write head on the hard drive is properly "parked" in a safe area on the hard drive.
