How do you clean a garbage disposal?

The easiest method to use is to pour 1/2 c. baking soda down the drain and follow it with 1c. of white vinegar. Let it set for several minutes while you boil some water. Pour the boiling water down the drain and flush the drain throuroughly. This is the method I use most often and it works well to clean it, get rid of smells and get it running more smoothly again. If you have a double sink you should clean both drains. Another method is to put a tablespoon of bleach in a gallon of water, pour it down the drain, let it sit for several minutes and flush the drain with cold water. I don't think this works nearly as well. You can also use ice cubes and citrus rinds to help clean the blades and the citrus rinds will give you a nice, fresh scent.

Dump 1/4 cup of bleach mixed with 1 cup of hot water into unit at least twice a week. Let set a few minutes, and then run the unit with the water running until clear. Here's a tip that will save you all of that trouble. When you have fruit peelings or even seafood take plastic wrap, cover it entirely, then use an old plastic grocery bag and put the peelings or seafood shells into that and tie a knot tightly then put in the garbage. When buying bananas (which should NEVER be put into the fridge) just wash the bananas down under cool water and wipe dry. This gets any of the seeping sweetness from the bananas off and you shouldn't see any fruit flies buzzing around. It always amazes me that when one especially buys bananas these fruit flies come out of nowhere.
