How do you operate the zig zag function on Kenmore model 158.12270?

When the "stich width" dial is on the red button it should stich in a straight line. Turn the dial on 1-5 and the machine should start the zig-zag function. That function on my machine is broken, but I have found the parts online to replace the broken ones. Good luck!!
