The first Sony Walkman (cassette tape player) wasn't commercially available until 1981- the electronics used to make it were only found in 1970 in classified military electronics units and not any commercially available device as is common today. However, the original wasn't made much different or with any particularly different materials even then - gray plastic case, about the size of a medium size cordless phone today. Took 4 AA's to run, and it ate up batteries fast.
My Sony Walkman turns on fine. Yours may not though. If you are having issues with yours, try changing the batteries. If that is not the case, verify that the walkman is getting power (ie do the gears turn when you press fast forward/rewind)? If not, then it is broken. May as well throw it out unless you have soldering experience. If it is getting power, but no sound is coming out, it is broken. Try a different pair of headphones or the headphones in a different device to verify that they work and if they do, then the headphone out jack is bad. Chances are that is a quick and easy solder fix (repair the the jack... probably 3 solder joints). But it could be the sound processing board is shot. If you have no solder experience and no electronics repair experience, your best bet is to junk it or pay someone to fix it. But to pay somebody to professionally fix it, it will cost roughly $60 (at least that is what it is like in Canada). You can get it fixed cheaper, but it won't be professional grade and usually has no guarantee that it will work.
