Why was the clapper invented?

The Clapper, was issued US Patent #5493618 on July 9, 1986 and first sold to the public on September 1, 1985.

Actually, the concept was invented in 1963 by Lee Boschen, though not patented. See his book, "Computer Circuit Projects you can build", Chapter 12 "The Sonolamp".

The Clapper helped save a few steps in turning off lights. The inventor intended for this to be used from a chair or bed by clapping to turn off lights.
