Yes and it is dangerous .
I don't see why not. They used coal in the old cookstoves in the "olden" days.
I reccomend you get a coal burning grill. With the gas grill, sure the flavor is great. But with the coal grill, you can capture the true flavor of backyard bbq. It's a bit of a pain to handle, but the foods worth it.
with a stove or a grill or more

The brand Brookstone has a grill called the "Chargriller Duo Combo Cooker Gas and Charcoal Grill" that uses coal and gas. It is also a brand that is known for its quality.
If you are trying to decide whether you should purchase a gas grill or a charcoal grill, you can compare the advantages of buying each grill. Possibly, the biggest advantage of buying a charcoal grill is the smoky flavor that charcoal imparts on food as it burns. The propane used in gas grills adds very little flavor to grilled foods, but propane tends to be a more consistent heat source than charcoal, and the cost of using a propane grill is generally less than the cost of using a charcoal grill in the long run.
Cooking on the barbeque is pretty straightfoward. Clean the grill with metal bristle brush, use your choice of wood or coal, and kindle the fire using wood chips or gas.
It is difficult to ignite wood or coal using a lit match. The match would burn down and singe your fingers long before the wood or coal would light. Using kindling of dry wood shaving, or thin twigs and dry grass, or paper (with or without kerosene), will ignite with one match and burn long enough to light a fire of wood or coal.

Using coal to generate electricity. (APEX)
Electricity is the flow or potential of electrons , it is produced using 1) hydro electricity (water flows from dam to propel a water wheel connected to an electric motor(alternator) , 2) using burning coal in coal fired stations (uses burning coal to heat water in to steam ,which steam then turns a gas turbine that is connected to an electric generator/alternator 3) using windfarms (uses a giant aerodynamic propeller to turn an alternator(electric motor/generator) from the force of wind.
Coal is a type of fossil fuel. If it sits for a long time under a lot of pressure coal can form diamonds. Coal also can be used on a simplistic level, in a barbecue grill for heating food.
