To date Melba bone china, look for specific markings on the bottom of the piece, as the manufacturer often included a backstamp indicating the year of production. Melba, a brand associated with the English pottery company W. H. Grindley, typically used distinct logos and patterns that can help identify the era. Additionally, reference books or online databases that specialize in ceramic marks can provide insights into the dating based on the backstamp. Lastly, researching the specific design or pattern can also offer clues about its age.

The value for a Melba bone china teacup bought in the 1950's would actually depend on a number of things. Some of these things would be, the exact date and the condition of the teacup.

Just what I've been trying to do with my Melba! I found a website that dates registration numbers of designs. I know this works for pottery, not sure about china but the numbers on my Melba seem to fit in. Mine reads 778351 so according to http://www.thepotteries.org/mark/reg.htm this is 1932. Have a look! You were kind enough to say "even if your wrong"! So Thanks, I got the courage to answer my small bit!
