This term refers to the hymen being torn - the hymen is tissue that surrounds the vaginal opening in some females, it normally doesn't cover much of the vaginal opening and is flexible so will stretch to allow penetration without tearing. The hymen typically only tears if penetration is rough or forced.


The hymen can be torn as a result of penetration such as using tampons or menstrual cups, masturbation, vaginal examination, sexual activity such as fingering or penile penetration during sexual intercourse, or as a result of sexual abuse/assault/rape.
