Depending on the variety turnips (the root) can be anywhere from a few inches in diameter to about a 7-8 inches in diameter in the case of rutabagas (Swedish Turnip). Turnips can be eaten at any size but usually taste better when they are smaller. The stems that grow above ground can reach 36 inches or more in height.
