After the candle and torch, the development of the oil lamp marked a significant advancement in artificial lighting. Oil lamps utilized various fuels, such as vegetable oils or animal fats, and provided a more efficient and controllable light source. Eventually, the invention of the gas lamp in the early 19th century and the subsequent introduction of electric lighting in the late 19th century transformed how people illuminated their homes and public spaces. Each innovation built upon the limitations and challenges of its predecessors, leading to the modern lighting solutions we use today.
