Puerto Rican people today share one common factor and that is that they have one of the most diverse genetic makeup out of all other ethnic groups. This has to do with their History stemming back to the times of the Taino Indians when Columbus fist set foot on the Island of Boriken. One of Columbus's followers, Juan Ponce DE Leon, set out to convert the Indian population from their native believes to Christianity. when the Taino population resisted the Spaniards wiped out about 90% of the Taino population, leaving the surviving Tainos no choice but to mix with whatever other groups were available at the time to re populate the race. Those other groups were the Spaniards and the African slaves. This is why our primary language is Spanish and our culture reflects aspects of African, Taino Indian and Spaniard. Today Puerto Ricans continue to carry on that mixture and the population of Puerto Ricans or Borinquenos, as we like to call ourselves, continue to have one of the most diverse genetic makeup in the world. From a biological point of view this diversity provides the Puerto Rican population with certain biological advantages, one of which is evident to anyone doing genealogical research, That is the inheritance of the longevity gene. Many Puerto Ricans tend to live well into their 90's some reach 100 years old or more. There is a certain Irony to this story which is based on historical facts and that is that Juan Ponce De Leon was searching for some mystical fountain of youth. In his actions to convert the Taino's faith to Christianity, he may have inadvertently and unknowingly discovered the fountain of youth.
