Processing of food can strip the product of its nutrients. As a result these nutrients are put back in, an example is enriched flour. The replacements are chemically identical to what nature had made. But these additives are most often man made.

Enriched food can be an indication to you of food that is highly processed. Your body does best with nutrients it gets from foods with the least amount of processing. Here even the trace nutrients are included in perfect balance. These trace nutrients in perfect harmony are most likely not returned to the processed food.

Also, there is a trend to add nutrients to more products. My store has water with vitamins added. This then would also be called enriched food.
