A red star chef typically refers to a chef who has been awarded high recognition in culinary competitions or by prestigious organizations, such as Michelin stars or other culinary accolades. The term often denotes expertise, creativity, and excellence in the culinary arts. In some contexts, it may also be used informally to describe a chef with a standout reputation in their field.

In 2008 there were 68 three star places. See www.3starrestaurants.com for a full list. The Michelin guides actually come out over several months, from October to March, so the answer is a bit of a moving target until March. The 2009 results are almost in, with the France guide out today. There is then a "Main Cities of Europe" guide due in late march which covers main cities in Scandinavia and eastern Europe. In theory this could add more three star places, though up until now the highest rated place in Scandinavia is two star. The site that I maintain will be updated as soon as the 2009 ratings are confirmed i.e. tomorrow. The site also shows some history of the 3 star ratings and my reviews of the places.
