Before germ theory, fromites were believed to be small animals that were the modes of contagion. The term was coined by Girolamo Fracastoro in the 16th century and was not disproved until the early 20th century. There were three modes of transmission: direct contact, fromites in clothing, untensils ext., and miasmata (or though the air).
