Freshen up often means to tend to light hygiene-related tasks. A person might go to the bathroom, splash some water on their face, comb or brush their hair, touch up on makeup, or put on more deodorant.

"Thank you for the invitation to dinner. Where is the restroom so I can freshen up a bit? My hands are dirty and my hair is a mess."

It can also be used in reference to studying something that was already learned but wasn't used in a while.

Example: "I was good at algebra, but I had to freshen up on it a bit."
