A dutch oven is a pan and lid set that can be used in both the oven and on the stovetop. They're usually about 5 quarts in size. Any substitution you make needs to be able to handle the heat- a good rule of thumb is if your pot has metal handles, it will be fine.


If your recipe does not call for browning or sauteeing in the dutch oven on the stovetop first, a crockpot is an effective substitute as well.
