Iron is tough. Anything made from it lasts for generations. Essentially, you must be tougher than the material you are working with. In order to mold iron to your will, you will want to be able to heat it, shape & bend it, cut it to length, drill it, grind it, weld it. Beyond that you are only limited by your imagination. Some professions related to blacksmithing are horseshoeing, auto mechanics and blacksmithing itself, both functional and decorative.

There are some basic skills that you need:

* the ability to work in and around hot conditions * willingness to work in a shop environment

* colour recognition * perseverance There are some skills that you can learn along the way:

* Hammer control * steel temperature from the colour of the steel * where to hit and how hard to hit.
