Marshmallows have a very long history, dating all the way back to ancient Egypt. It was likely originally used for medicinal purposes, as the plant from which marshmallows are made has throat healing properties. However, the modern marshmallow was not invented until the 19th century in France, when sweet makers began to whip the marshmallow sap and adding sweetener into it.
