Chips, specifically potato chips, are believed to have originated in the United States in the mid-19th century. Legend has it that they were invented in 1853 by George Crum, a chef at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York, who created them as a response to a customer's complaint about thick fries. The popularity of potato chips grew, and they eventually became a staple snack food across the country and beyond.
