Who invented the lolipop?

George Smith invented the lollipop. One day, he was at his confectionary business and his co-worker was eating a hard candy and his hands got all sticky and icky. His friend Bob Marsquee said, "Ugh, I HATE these hard candies. They're a hassle and i just can not take the mess anymore!" And he threw the candy away and got back to work. George thought to himself, what if i could invent a product of such kind that someone can enjoy with out the mess of a normal hard candy... Hmm... But what could i do? What could i do to fix this flaw?

He experimented with this for a while and came out with the "lollipop". He called it the Lollipop because of his favorite racing horse Lolly Pop...

In ancient Egypt, people used to prepare a form of lollipop by crystallizing fruit and nuts with sugar which would then be consumed after placing them around a stick. People have been eating some form of lollipop for a very long time.

In 1908 the Racine Confectionery Machine Company made the first commercial machine for manufacturing the popular candy.

It has been used for centuries by ancient people. The Eyptians used it and it was found in Tuts Tomb and was used by Alexdander the Great. It has also been used in the production process of tobacco. There are 300 types of licorice. The American Licorice company began in 1914 with selling licorice cigarettes and cigars as a cheap alterative for tobacco. In the 1920's it was sold to a San Franciso company who started to make it in candy the 1930's. These were called Snaps.

There seems to be many ideas around who first invented lollies or lollypops.
The first confectioneries that closely resemble what we call lollipops date to the Middle Ages, when the nobility would often eat boiled sugar with the aid of sticks or handles.
According to the book Food For Thought: Extraordinary Little Chronicles of the World, they were invented by George Smith of New Haven, Connecticut, who started making large boiled sweets mounted on sticks in 1908. He named them after a racehorse of the time, Lolly Pop.

Not sure who invented, but they were invented in 1924 and then bought by Spangler Candy Co in 1953. Spangler is still manufacturing them!
