Dr. Redi was an Italian physician who lived in the 17'th century and was at least one of the first people to disprove a popular theory of the day that maggots (and other lifeforms) spontaneously developed from other living matter, such as meat, without sexual involvement.

He did this by testing meat isolated in a way that no fly could lay its eggs on it, against meat that was readily available to the flies. The one, of course, produced fly larvae (maggots) and the other did not, thus disproving a myth held to be true by many "scientists" of the day.
