In the 20th century, standardization of Cooking Equipment happened. Before then, most equipment was pretty much what you had and you adapted. The 1.7 size will feed a family of 4-6 with no waste. Larger families had a bigger kettle. It has always been a case of cooking what is necessary for the number of people to be fed.
