There are plenty of theories on how many times you should chew a mouthful of food. Chewing is directly related to the digestive process, and so is necessary for good digestion, which is necessary for good health.

Simply shovelling food into your mouth with the aim of getting it down as fast as possible is a bad idea, particularly so because you'll miss out on the enjoyment which comes from savouring the taste and texture of your food.

There's no need to count the number of times you chew. I can't think of anything more boring and less conducive to eating enjoyment! The happier we are the healthier we are likely to be, and it's difficult to imagine happily sitting over your food mentally saying, one, two, three, etc, etc, oh, at last, thirty-six! Now for the next mouthful...one, two, three...twenty-four, twenty-... oh, damn, I lost count...!

Inventing and insisting upon rules and regulations about food can have a negative effect on your enjoyment of food in particular and life in general, and therefore on your health. Relax and enjoy, don't chew a couple of times and swallow, and if you haven't time to sit and make your food experience a good one, try to wait until you can find that time - it really does make a difference.
