Metal gets hot because on an atomic level, metals are bonded to one another by metallic bonds where there are a bunch of electrons from different atoms floating around all of the nuclei. These electrons can absorb the heat easily and pass it from one to another. When metal is heated, the electrons pass it around and around until it runs out of energy, or you touch it and they pass the energy to your hand!

Objects like metal that "get hot" are called conductors because they can conduct heat.
