I hadn't heard of this technique, but it makes sense and probably works. You cry when you cut an onion because when you disrupt the cell membrane walls of the onion, you release a gas which causes tears in your eyes. By putting the onion in the freezer, you are probably solidifying this chemical to a certain extent, and preventing the compound from being released. But I think this would probably only work for a certain amount of time before the onion warmed back up, and if you left the onion in the freezer too longer, it probably wouldn't benefit the onion.
An alternate technique that Alton Brown has recommended and wouldn't involve any advance steps is lighting a candle near the cutting board, the flame burns off the gases before they reach your eyes.
yes if you put the oniion in the freezer 10-15 miutes before you use it ,it prevents you from crying
You wont get same taste of onion if you boil it. But yes it will prevent you from crying.
The dependent variable in this experiment would be the amount of crying produced by cutting each onion, measured in tears shed or self-reported discomfort levels. The chilling method (freezer, refrigerator, kitchen) would be the independent variable being tested to observe its impact on reducing tears while cutting the onion.
Since tears come out of your eyes, you could technically get your eyes removed so you could not physically cry anymore :)
Not really but if you stick it in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before use it helps a lot!
You taste something else and feel the real since instead of crying you feel metallic.
no
By microwaving the onion you will cook it, this will prevent you from crying when you peel it but will also spoil the onion. Try this instead peel the onions in a bowl of cold water or under a running tap, or peel them outside so the wind blows away the onion fumes. Or try an old wives tale which is to hold a tea spoon between the teeth in your mouth. Good luck.
To peel onions without crying, you can try chilling the onion in the fridge before peeling, cutting the onion under running water, or wearing goggles to protect your eyes from the onion's fumes.
I set the onion in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes and grab a stick of gum. Both are known to be helpful and they really are. And, if the onion is really pungent and might not be good in whatever dish, you can rinse the onion after cutting it.
wear goggles so no juice of the onion goes in your eyes
is order to avoid crying 1.wear glasses 2.wash while cutting
