The onion is used to clean the surface of the grill top. Cut an onion in half, insert a fork in the top part of the cut onion and rub the cut side along the grill top, cleaning the entire grill. The grill should be very hot, and you can do this before and/or after cooking.
I don't see any reason why not. this is a technique used in cooking, for instance, bratwurst. (simmer in beer and onion before grilling) It lets you keep the food on the grill for less time, as it's already cooked, to some extent, inside. FriPilot
Onion is used to clean the grill top. When you are finished cooking, and while the grill is still very hot, cut an onion in half, press a fork into the top part of the onion, and run the cut side of the onion along the grill top, all over the grill. This will usually clean the food particles off the grill. Many people use this method to clean their grills rather than use a wire brush.
If an onion is wrapped in foil, it can take an hour.
Use aluminum foil to create a ring that the onion can sit in. Cut off the top and hollow out about a third of the onion. Mince the onion and mix with your choice of items such as bacon and/or mushrooms as well as desired seasonings and refill the empty space. Place a large pat of butter on top and cook until soft.
An onion is generally good for about 1-2 months before it goes bad.

Yes you can, but whether the grill is gas, charcoal, or even oven (in the house); I recommend some kind of a nice marinade, begun the night before. I use water, oil(s), sugar(s), flavored jelly (orange, raspberry, blackberry, whatever), the Italian spices (most of them), onion, garlic, very little salt and a just a bit of pepper. Refrigerate your thawed (not frozen) meat/chicken in the marinade for a minimum of eight hours, and bring to room temperature in the morning while preparing the barbecue sauce.(Directions for making the barbecue sauce are intentionally missing...)The barbecue sauce itself is slathered on in the last 10 -20 minutes of actual cooking. The natural gas grill provides heat; not the flavoring for the meat.
