There are two industries (apart from finance) that flourish during a recession. Beauty and health; and hospitality. The reason behind this is often attributed to emotions caused by a recession. Both of these industries provide a service that (for the most part) makes you feel better about yourself. You go to the nail parlour, get a manicure, feel pretty. Go to a bar, have a drink, feel numbed/happy/drunk. Both of these services however are quick fixes to the depression a recession usually causes and therefore requires return visits for the feeling you get from them. Therefore there will always be jobs in the industry.
Also, hospitality is usually viewed as a 'filler' career. Something to do during schooling, in between jobs etc. This means that there are constatntly people leaving their jobs in hospitality when they find positions in the industry they had studied for.
