The newer units often times use an external thermostat as well as several internal ones to determine when the compressor should kick into gear. If the ambient temperature is below about 55 degrees f, the freezer will not turn on unless it is specifically designed for what "they" call "garage use" which means the thermostat regulator has been altered to run in lower than average room temperature. There is, however, a kit you can but for your freezer if you experience such problems called a "garage kit" (go figure!) it retails for under twenty dollars usually.
