If you are going to Indian restaurant and love curry, but don’t know what the dishes mean, you could end up buying a Saag and not realizing it’s quite hot or a Pasanda and not realizing it’s mild. While some Indian restaurants will describe the curries, others only tell you the name, so here is how to find the right curry for you.
-Step 1: Balti
This famous curry is actually a style of cooking using a large pot and has both meat and vegetables in it. It is generally medium hot.
-Step 2: Dhansak
A Dhansak usually contains lamb and vegetables and is a hot dish with a sweet and sour flavor.
-Step 3: Korma
Another well-known dish, it is made from coconuts and almonds and often cream, so it is a very mild but flavorsome dish.
-Step 4: Moghlai
A Moghlai curry should be rich and creamy with added yogurt. It is mild to medium, hotter than the Korma but not hot.
-Step 5: Pasanda
Pasanda is a mild, creamy dish made from lamb and often with ground almonds.
-Step 6: Saag
Saag is made from lamb and spinach and can be medium hot to hot, depending on how it is made. It can also contain other meats.
-Step 7: Vindaloo
Most people would have heard of a Vindaloo, it is a popular dish, which can vary greatly in how it is made, and is very hot indeed.
Your Indian restaurant may have many other options on the menu. If you are not sure how hot it is, then ask your waiter, he should be able to tell you whether it is mild, medium or hot. If you are brave enough you can just guess and see what you get, most people though prefer to know beforehand.
