I assume that 'crooks' are the staffs used by sheep shepherds? If so, yes, a shepherd is still using a shepherd's crook today. The crook part is used mainly to catch a sheep round the throat, either to get hands on, or to lift the sheep from an awkward place - in a ditch of water, mud, or on a ledge on a cliff face within reach, and so on.
