Short answer: No.

There is absolutely no job that requires an MA in Criminology. The only thing this degree is useful for is a bridge to the PhD. Criminology is a completely academic field - not practical, such as Criminal Justice. But that's another useless degree you don't want to get me started on.

I have a BA in Sociology. There are so many ways I could have taken this. I knew I wanted to go to Graduate School, but nearing my senior year I didn't know what field to study. I chose Criminology because I knew it would be interesting and I liked behavioral theory. Now I have an MA in Criminology. Yes, it was interesting. But completely useless.

Don't get me wrong- I have a decent job. I am a children's therapist. I don't really like it, and I never feel adequate, because I have no educational background in this area. The job required a Master's degree in a behavioral sciences field, which Criminology is considered, so I got hired. However, I had no background on diagnoses, interventions, and child development. These are things I had to learn along the way. I've been doing this for 4 years, and the entire time I've been searching for something better. The hours are terrible and pay isn't that great. I am a little 'stuck' because there isn't any other jobs in my area (central PA) that would pay as much as I make now doing anything else I'm qualified for.

If I could do it all over again - and wanted to pursue mental health - I would have gotten my Masters in a 'licensable' field, such as Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology. There's really no point to go any other way. If I was SO into Criminology that I just HAD to pursue a Masters in this field, I would have recognized earlier that I needed to go all the way - get the PhD - and become a professor. There's simply no other reason to pursue the MA in Criminology. However, with student loans being as they are and already way over my head in student loan debt, the PhD is NOT an option for me.

To make a long answer short: If you aren't planning on pursuing the PhD, an MA in Criminology is not worth it. If you are interested in pursuing graduate work, here is my suggestion: check your local classified and open job postings. Find the job you want, and look at the necessary qualifications for that position.

I wish I had done this before pursuing an 'interesting' degree.

How much does it cost to get a master's degree in criminology?

A degree in Criminology (the study of crime and criminals) is a Bachelor's degree in the Sociology department of most colleges and not to be confused with "Criminalistics" which is a Forensic Science Masters Degree. Criminology was a Bachelor of Arts program at my college and prepared me well for my career as a parole officer working with and monitoring criminals released from prison. You can expect to spend around $40,000 for a four year degree at a state college. That bill can be cut in half if you start out at a Community College and then transfer to a 4 year school. The bill can be fully paid if you are willing to spend a few years in the Army like I did.
