I'll just throw a few ideas out, and I don't have any dates. So if you need to support your ideas, you'll have to do some research. In the beginning of human history, the only way to listen to music was to make it. Probably many people in the tribe took part in drumming and singing, likely the first ways we made music. Then music was live for thousands of years after that. Probably it was usually used in religious contexts, including marriages and feasts of other kinds. You'll have to look up the origins or radio, but that was a big break-through. You might also look up concert performances, and the use of music in Greek theater. Then you had very old recording technologies like resin tubes, and 78rpm records. After 78's there were 33 & 1/3 rpm records on vinyl. Live concerts have never lost their popularity, although making music at home and in small groups (like the chamber music of guys like Mozart and Schubert) has become less and less common. Centuries ago, it probably was rare to find a house where there were not people who could play more than one instrument. Maybe one of the downsides of all this technology.
