Yes, slaves on ships could develop scurvy, a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. The cramped and unsanitary conditions aboard slave ships, combined with a lack of fresh fruits and vegetables, made scurvy a common affliction during long voyages. Many enslaved individuals suffered from various health issues, including scurvy, due to inadequate nutrition and poor living conditions.
200 slaves were on a average ship
Slave traders used every available space to fit as many slaves as possible on a slave ship.
To help increase profit, slave ship owners would pack as many slaves as possible into a ship as possible, creating a very crowded environment. Slaves were chained to the ship, so going to the bathroom meant that you just went, getting you and those around you covered in your waste. There was lots of cases of dehydration, scurvy, and dysentery. Over a third of slaves that were transported died. Also, sailors and captains could do whatever they wanted to the slaves, such as raping, murdering, or torturing them.
The most common illnesses were scurvy, which is caused when you don't have enough vitamin C, dehydration, when you don't drink enough water, starvation, diseases, and the deadly heat on the ship.
