A major French seaport during World War I was Calais. It was the major port which had English Channel connections. Calais and Dunkirk are also the routes allied forces soldiers were evacuated in 1940.

Its in Northeastern France directly across the English Channel from Dover. It is the closest French port from England. It is where the Nazis thought the Allied Armies would land-not Normandy!
The easiest way is to get a ferry from Limassol to the Greek port of Thessaloniki, and then to proceed overland to the French port of Calais either by train, coach or car. At Calais you can either take the ferry to Dover, or go by rail via the Channel Tunnel.
