Ferdinand Magellan's first voyage, which began in 1519, lasted nearly three years, concluding in 1522. The expedition aimed to find a westward route to the Spice Islands and became the first to circumnavigate the globe, although Magellan himself did not survive to complete the journey. Out of the original five ships, only one, the Victoria, returned to Spain with 18 of the original 270 crew members.
