I plotted a highly inaccurate track from my home in Friday Harbor to Glacier Bay. My track was comprised of straight lines thru both the islands and the inside passage. Obviously a substantial amount of winding thru these passages would be necessary. I came up with 790nm. I good ballpark figure from Seattle is probably around 1100nm.

What makes a glacier slippery?

Glaciers are slippery due to a layer of surface ice that melts slightly under pressure from the weight of the ice above. This thin layer of water reduces friction between the glacier and the underlying rock or soil, making it easier for the glacier to flow or slide.
