In retrospect it was not. But Odysseus could not know this in advance, could he?
Odysseus waits for the cyclops to return in hope that the cyclops will be a good host and give him a present. It is really Odysseus' curiousity that compels him to stay.
He gives him wine
Odysseus didn't know that a Cyclops lived there, but he assumed that the normal rules of being a good host to visitors applied. They didn't.
In the Odyssey by Homer Polyphemus, the cyclops asked Poseidon to make sure Odysseus never got home, and that he should lose all his men, so he would wander trying to find his way home alone.Hope that's good enough!kill odesyeus for revengeHe asks to take the barrel to the ship without getting caught by Odysseus
The cyclops sees Odysseus' men as a short-term resource which is to be consumed. The cyclops takes good care of his sheep, milking them daily, and letting them go out to pasture to graze.
Odysseus is the main focus of the stort
Not a good one - blinded by Odysseus, Polyphemus asked his father, the god of the sea Poseidon, for vengeance. Poseidon fixed things so that he spent 10 hazardous years wandering the sea before he got back to his kingdom of Ithaca.Another take:The present or 'gift' that the Cyclops promises Odysseus is to eat Odysseus's crew first, and save Odysseus for last.Answer 3:A ram that he later uses for sacrifice in the underworld.
Xenia was the name of the rule of hospitality that the Ancient Greeks believed in. Not following Xenia meant that you were not being a good citizen.
The cyclops treats Odysseus' men with hostility by eating them, while he shows care and affection for his animals by providing for their needs. He prioritizes his animals over the men by saving them for last to eat.
it is not initialy good as his men do not wish to stay in the cave yet Odysseus ignores them and decides to stay to meet the owner of the cave. but once the cyclops arives back at the cave Odysseus uses wit to make a plan of how he can escape. he plans to tell the cyclops his name is nobody so when he cries for help nobody will reply thinking the cyclops is crazy. when this is done Odysseus gets the cyclops drunk on his wine which he received as a present which was meant to be diluted 1part wine to 20parts water. this gets the cyclops drunk and they then stab his eye out. when this is done they tie themselves under the sheep. overall Odysseus shows qualities of both a good and bad leader in this book in showing how he doesnt listen to his men yet he is able to think forward and get out of situations without just using pure power.
Odysseus is a round character because he contains both good and bad qualities that contradict one another. He is dynamic because towards the start of the epic, when he interacts with the Cyclops, Odysseus pride cannot be contained. Towards the end, when he is battling with the suitors, he is more patient to reveal himself.
Poseidon, the god of the seas, is trying to prevent Odysseus from getting home because Odysseus blinded the Cyclops Polyphemus, who is Poseidon's son. Poseidon holds a grudge against Odysseus for this act of cunning.
