The Mayflower originally departed from the English port of Southampton in August 1620, accompanied by a smaller vessel the Speedwell. Because the Speedwell was leaking, the ships were forced to return first to Dartmouth and then to Plymouth.

The Mayflower finally set sail alone from Plymouth, England, in September 1620 for the 66-day voyage to the American site that the Puritan settlers also named Plymouth.
