Cook called the islands the North Island and the South Island.
Cook Strait, which separates the North Island and South Island of New Zealand, was named after Lieutenant James Cook (later Captain). He was the first to circumnavigate the main islands of New Zealand.
Apia is the capital of Samoa, situated in the Island of Upolu. There is another growing Town in the main Island of Savai'i, and that is Salelologa.
He linked Stewart Island to the bottom of the South Island,not realising it was,in fact,an island.
