Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo was born around 1499 in Portugal. He died on January 3, 1543, off the coast of California, during an expedition to explore the western coast of North America for Spain. His death was the result of wounds sustained from a skirmish with Native Americans and subsequent illness. Cabrillo is best known for being the first European to set foot on the West Coast of the United States.
