The "Imo" and the "Mont Blanc"
The Halifax Explosion, which occurred on December 6, 1917, left approximately 25,000 people homeless. The massive explosion, caused by the collision of two ships in the harbor, devastated large parts of Halifax, Nova Scotia, destroying homes and buildings. The disaster resulted in significant loss of life and widespread destruction, necessitating immediate relief efforts for those displaced.
Yes. The two ships, the S.S. Imo (pronounced Ee-m-oh), and the Mont Blanc (pronounced Moh-nt-bl-ah-nck), collided.
An explosion split it in two sinking the whole ship.
About 103,000 military personnel died in the war. Maybe another thousand or two civilians all together, on ships sunk, in the explosion at Black Tom caused by German saboteurs, and so on.
Every December 6, at 9:00 a.m. (the time of the explosion in 1917 was 9:04 a.m.), there is a memorial service at the base of the Explosion Memorial Tower. The monument is in Fort Needham Park, in the area of the city that was known at the time as Richmond, and that was destroyed in the blast. Survivors are always honoured at the service and, at the 2011 service, there were still two survivors present. It's a very moving tribute every year.
We have two, possibly more, ports of call for cruise ships in Nova Scotia. Halifax, Nova Scotia is our capital city. Sydney, Nova Scotia also receives many cruise ships throughout the season.
The Mont Blanc was a French munitions ship, carrying a cargo of heavy explosives from New York to Bordeaux, France, for war use. Because the ship, overloaded with cargo, was slow and had only two guns for protection, it was ordered to Halifax to join a convoy of ships headed for Europe. These convoys were regularly assembled in Halifax's huge inner harbour, the Bedford Basin, during both world wars. The Mont Blanc was inbound into the Basin and passing through the narrow channel into the basin known as "The Narrows" when it collided with the outbound Norwegian ship Imo. The resulting explosion killed more than 2000 people, injured over 9000, and flattened a large section of Halifax.
xXx The Halifax explosion was when a ship came into port and a colision caused it to blow up in the port of Halifax. At 9 AM in 1917 the Halifax Explosoin happened because a ship, (the Mont Blanc carrying explocives) caught on fire because the ship Imo (pronounced: EE-mo) accidentally hit it because they had poor communications. Mont Blanc caught on fire and drifted into port, it exploded soon after. The blast was so strong it blew windows out of houses all the way back to Dartmouth, and the shock was felt in Sydney 250 miles away. Because of this 200 people were blinded. 25,000 lost their homes. 9,000 people were injured and more than 3,000 were killed.

However, if you're referring to significant urban areas within the Halifax Regional Municipality, two notable neighborhoods are Dartmouth and Bedford, both of which are part of the metropolitan area surrounding Halifax.
