White Island (known as Whakaari in Maori) is New Zealand's most consistently active volcano but the last significant eruption occurred in July 2000 during a period of actitivity that lasted from march to September. the last eruption that caused loss of life was in 1914 when 10 sulphur miners were killed when a crater wall collapsed; only their cat survived.
