Use a chart not a map. WGS 84 is probably the best datum
The captain asked me "how many nautical miles are we off the shore?"
The distance from Holland, Michigan, to Chicago, Illinois, is approximately 80 nautical miles. This measurement can vary slightly depending on the specific route taken over water. Nautical miles are often used in maritime contexts to account for the curvature of the Earth.
A giraffe can sprint thirty five miles per hour over short distances. They can run comfortably at ten miles per hour over longer distances.
A nautical cable, also known as a nautical mile, is defined as 1,000 meters, which is approximately 3,280.84 feet. It is used in maritime and air navigation to measure distances over the earth's surface, based on the circumference of the Earth. One nautical mile is equivalent to one minute of latitude.
Nautical miles are used as a distance measurement both in the air and on the sea, but not so often on the ground. So if "air miles" refers to the statute miles that we use over land, then a nautical mile is about 15% longer. Therefore, to convert one to the other, multiply by 1.15. 1 nm = 1.15 miles 100 nm = 115 miles 20 nm = 23 miles and so on.
A distance of around 5,700 miles to over 7,900 milesseparates Russia and Suriname. The distance from St. Petersburg in western Russia to Suriname is 5,718 miles [9,202 kilometers; 4,969 nautical miles]. The distance from Novosibirsk in southwestern Russia is 7,600 miles [12,231 kilometers; 6,604 nautical miles]. The distance from the Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia is 7,920 miles [12,746 kilometers; 6,882 nautical miles].
The distance from Holland, MI, to Waukegan, IL, is approximately 35 nautical miles. This distance can vary slightly based on the specific route taken across Lake Michigan. Nautical miles are often used for maritime navigation, making them relevant for travel over water.

About 5000 miles or more or less
Measuring the path using Google Earth, by sea from London to Sydney using the Suez Canal was around 12,000 nautical miles. Using the Panama Canal was closer to 12,500 nautical miles using a similar method to draw the path on Google Earth. This doesn't take into consideration the curvature of the Earth and both were as close as I could get to a direct sea route. Using http://www.freemaptools.com/measure-distance.htm the direct or 'as the crow flies' route is a shade over 9,200 nautical miles.
Just a bit over 500 nautical miles.
That cannot be calculated without knowing the average speed over that distance.
