The first European known to explore the Rio Grande River was Spanish explorer Francisco de Coronado in the mid-16th century. He traveled through the region in search of the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. While Indigenous peoples had lived along the river long before this, Coronado’s expedition marked the first recorded European exploration of the area.
