The desire for increased profit led Europeans to seek a direct trade route to Asia. If they could dispense with the middleman, they could keep the extra for themselves.
They wanted a route to Asia. The Silk Road was long, expensive, and dangerous.
European countries wanted to find a shorter route to the Far East to reduce the time and cost of trade with Asian markets for valuable goods such as spices, silk, and porcelain. The existing routes through land and sea were long and dangerous, prompting explorers to seek more efficient alternatives to gain a competitive advantage in the lucrative trade.
The reasons the Europeans wanted to find a route to the far east is because they wanted to expand their trade profits

Because the Ottoman Empire had taken control of the Eastern Land Routes to asia. Portugal DID find an all water route that went east, it went around the southern tip of Africa. Columbus wanted to go west. But don't think Columbus was a hero for accidentally discovering the Americas. He also cut off the hands of the Natives that did not bring gold back to him. He was a lucky and savage man.
The Silk Road stopped serving as a shipping route for silk about 1453, forcing Europeans to seek alternate trade routes and triggering the age of exploration (and ultimately the discovery of the New World).
INDIRECTLY.The success of the Ottomans in overrunning Constantinople in 1453 effectively closed off European direct trade with East Asia over the Silk Road. This forced Europeans to seek an alternate route to East Asia. This started the exploration period. However, there was nothing that Muslims said or did to convince Europeans to choose this outlet and the Ottomans would have been more than willing to be trade-intermediaries with East Asia. However, European States (other than France for Anti-Habsburg reasons) had a very antagonistic relationship with the Ottomans and did not want to have serious trade relations with them.
What does Christopher Columbus seek for besides a new water route.
Asia.
Europeans wanted a new route to Asia because the route that they had was by land and it was very dangerous and long, with many people dying during the journey. Most Europeans hoped for a convenient path by sea in order to speed up the trade process. Asian goods, including spices, jewels, and silk were known for being very expensive and high quality. Items were also taxed multiple times when travelling by land, so it was cheaper to travel by sea while trading.
