Helios is a titan who drives the chariot of the sun around the earth (for sunrise and sunset). In the Odyssey, Odysseusand his surviving crew land on Thrinacia, an island sacred to the sun god. There, the sacred red cattle of the sun were kept.Though Odysseus warns his men, when supplies run short they kill and eat some of the Oxen_of_the_Sun. The guardians of the island, Helios' daughter, tell their father about this. Helios appeals to Zeustelling them to dispose of Odysseus' men or he will take the sun and shine it in the Underworld. Zeus destroys the ship with his lightning bolt, killing all the men except for Odysseus.
Odysseus wished to avoid the island of Helios altogether. Unfortunately his men were tired and hungry and didn't want to keep going on. So Odysseus finally consented to let them land on the island as long as they made and oath not touch the cattle that was on the island. They stayed on the island for many months and one day while Odysseus was off praying the men decided to disobey and slaughter some of the steer. Because of this they are killed and Odysseus barely escapes with his life.
Eurylochus, a member of Odysseus's crew, convinced him to land on the isle of Helios against his better judgment. Despite Odysseus's warnings not to do so, the hungry and tired crew disobeyed and ended up bringing calamity upon themselves.
There are only really a few of Odysseus' men who are under the hold of the lotus flower. When they refuse to leave Odysseus has them tied up and forced onto the ship. As the ship sails away from the land of the lotus-eaters the men gradually recover and get their will-power back. Hope this helps ;)
He returns back to Circe's island (Aeaea).
In "The Cattle of the Sun God" in Homer's "The Odyssey," the external conflict arises when Odysseus and his men land on the island of Thrinacia, home to Helios, the sun god, and they are warned not to harm his sacred cattle. Despite the warning, Odysseus's men slaughter the cattle for food, resulting in Helios demanding Zeus to punish them. As a resolution, Zeus sends a thunderbolt to destroy Odysseus's ship, killing his crew and leaving Odysseus alone to continue his journey home.
