The theory of evolution by natural selection is a very powerful theory because it explains so much:

• The diversity of species - there are 350,000 species of beetles.
• The similarity between related species - African and Indian elephants are different species, but DNA analysis shows they are related and they look similar.
• The existence of related fossils; millions of fossils have been found of extinct species; many apparently related to current species.
• The theory also makes strong predictions; it shows how species can be related and how they developed over time - as has been said, you don't find rabbit fossils in Cambrian rocks.
• The theory also predicts how species will appear; evolution operates by making small adaptations to the existing models - because of that, many biological features are poorly designed: the human eye retina is inside out (the nerves are on the wrong side) and we have a blind spot, our spines are poorly arranged for bipedal walking - because they've been adapted from four legged apes. The Giant Panda is a bear that has made adaptions to eat bamboo shoots; but because of the poor food value, they have to spend their waking lives eating.

Natural selection is also used in engineering to design complex systems; some systems are so complicated that it is difficult to achieve an optimal design by conventional techniques. Instead, engineers produce simulations of the system on computer and use a natural selection technique to optimise the design.

The theory of evolution can help those who need an explanation as to why we are here and how we arrived here. We can also use the theory of creation to the same end. In the end we'll believe what we want to believe, and we'll accept those beliefs which make us comfortable. That's really the bottom line. Many of us need to feel comfortable with our lives and believe we have a purpose. Some simply need to get out and enjoy the blue sky and sunshine and flowers and birds; others need to know what they're here on earth for. Provided we aren't hurting anyone in the process of pursuing whatever belief suits us, go for it.
