The implication of the Pocahontas myth is that when a story is told over and over , pretty soon it gets passed on so much that children are taught the story as if it were true in the classrooms. It shows that truth often gets buried when a story sound interesting but has no basis in fact.
The story of Pocahontas is much more drab in reality and truth than the fanciful fictions written in movies. Pocahontas the movie succeeded as it built on a type of Romeo and Juliet storyline that is always a good sell. Pocahontas the real person succeeded because she stayed true to her cultural teachings.
It is true. although not every little thing in the Walt disney is true of course! but in the us history tale it is all true!
John Rolfe . Married him in 1614. The story about Smith is not true. He did NOT save Jamestown. He was only there a very few months and he lied about his contribution to the settlement in a book he wrote several years later. He also made up the story about Pocahontas and she died young so couldn't refute his story. The man who did save Jamestown was the husband of Pocahontas and gave tobacco seeds to the colony. That was John Rolfe.
As most know the real life Pocahontas was named Matoka at birth. What most don't know is that her mother who was also named Pocahontas died when giving birth to Pocahontas. It is said by the oral history of the Indians in question that people called her Pocahontas even before the coming of age ceremony when she was about 10. These factors lead her to choose the name Pocahontas.Source: The true story of Pocahontas: the other side of historyBy Linwood Custalow, Angela L. Daniel
