The surname Roy belongs mostly to an upper, or higher, caste. However, the name has been found to be used in lower castes, as well, such as the schedule caste. Most of ROY/ RAY belongs to superior class, that's in sense of caste/ wealth/ education and their culture. It can be found in many community as few. Unless untill community had not being lifted their superiority, surname Roy/ Ray or Rai can not be achieved. Yes, few of them may comes under Schedule caste, but they are the victim and desendants of Pure/ real Brahmin and their community is combination of Kshatriya brahmins clan i.e. Kashyapa/ Gautama/ Shandilya/ Mirichi gotra.... and fact is that they does not believe on any inferiority.
