The people called themselves, 'Inupiat', 'Yupik', and 'Aleut'. The Aleuts gradually moved east, and lost the common languages used by the Yupik and Inupiat. In time, the word, 'Eskimo' in the Alaska area came to mean both the Yupik and the Inupiat to outsiders.
